The NOUN

Nouns are naming words of people, places, animals, birds and things.

·                    Mr. John, Mr. Paul  (Name of the people),

·                    America, England (Name of the place),

·                    Dog, Cat (Name of animals),

·                    Parrot, Pigeon (Name of birds),

·                    Gate, Door, Table (Name of things).

Kinds of Nouns:

1.   Proper Noun:  A Proper noun is the name of a particular person or thing.

 Eg: Mr. John – (Person), America – (Country).

Other Eg: The Alps, Mount Everest, The Pacific Ocean, The Red Sea, The Arabian Sea, World War II.

2.      Common Noun: A common noun is a name given to any person or thing of the same class.

      Eg: man, woman, boy, girl (persons), pen, table, book (things).

Other Ex: Mountain, peak, river, sea, canal, district, state, war, university, revolution, fan, television, radio.

3.      Collective Noun: A collective noun is the name given to a group of persons or things considered

as a whole.

 Eg: crowd – (a collection of people), fleet – (a collection of ships)

Other Ex: Police, public, committee, government, cattle, jury, herd, army.

4.      Material Noun: A material noun is used to name the matter or substance or which things are made.

Eg: gold-(metal), cloth-(substance)

Other Ex: Iron, silver, copper, wood, coffee, tea, water, milk, air.

5.      Abstract Noun: An abstract noun is the name of quality, action or state.

Quality: kindness, whiteness, softness, darkness, beauty, wisdom, honesty,

State: slavery, childhood, boyhood, sorrow, poverty, sleep, youth, death,

 Action: movement, judgment, laughter, theft, decision, hatred

The names of the Arts and Sciences are also abstract nouns.

Eg: Grammar, Physics, Chemistry, Music, and Painting.

6.      Countable Nous Countable nouns name objects which can be counted. They have singular and plural forms. In this category come common nouns (book, table, fan etc) and some collective nouns (union, team, committee etc).

Eg: a boy, a girl, a bench, a chair (countable nous - singular)

Other Ex: boys, girls, benches, chairs (countable nouns - plural)

7.      Uncountable Nous Uncountable nouns name objects which cannot be counted.

Eg: wood, water, rice, sugar.

Always Singular Uncountable Nouns These nouns name objects which cannot be counted. They are always singular. They do not have plural forms. They do not take article. They take the verb in the singular.

Eg: water, honey, bread, rice, sugar, iron, steel, gold, copper, mathematics, physics, chemistry, politics, news.
